30 Day Sketch Challenge

Well, the 30 Day Sketch Challenge is over.

The month of August went by extremely fast but I managed to do 27 sketches wihtin the 30 days.  Not too bad considering some of them were done by flashlight and candlelight and others were done in a moving car.

It was a lot of fun to do the challenge and a few friends and I have decided that we will do the sketch challenge again in January.  If you want to join us we'd be happy to have you play along.  There are no rules, just sketch whatever you like.  Our sketches will be posted on Instagram with the tag #30daysketch.

To see what my talented friends and I were up to during the month you can search #30daysketch on instagram and all the pictures will come up and my profile on Instagram is @mayabki

Here is a short video of the 27 sketches I managed to do.  I tried to put it on here but Blogger is having a hard time with it.

30 DAY SKETCH CHALLENGE!!

It’s August!!  (well almost)

I thought I’d have a little fun, and add more to my already busy days, and try to stretch my drawing art skills with this 30 day sketch challenge.

Every day in August I am going to try to draw/sketch something new.  Could be a pencil drawing or a zentangle with colourful pens.  Who knows.  I certainly have no idea where this month is going to take me but I know it will be fun!

I would be over the moon if you’d like to join me on this adventure and do some sketches and doodles with me.  Where ever you post, Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, remember to include the tag: #30daysketch.  That way we can all enjoy each other’s work.  Please comment below where you will post most of your sketches so I can follow you.  Thanks!

And if you don’t want to join but want to see what I get up to, you can follow along here, I will try my best to post my work here as often as possible, on Instgram and occasionally on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Have a fantastic August everyone!

Sharing Sunday

Oh my, it's been awhile since I was last on the blog!  Things have been busy around here with the family so I haven't had much of a chance to up date things here.  I have a few new flower presses that I will share soon.  But today is Sharing Sunday and I have a special one for you.

I don't know if you've heard but our precious bees are dying at alarming rates.  And without bees we have will have no food to eat.  Well, real food anyway.  I don't know about you but I far prefer real food over processed, factory made artificial stuff.

Recently, scientists discovered that a pesticide called “neonics” is the cause of the bees dying.  Sadly, big retailers are still selling the products that contain these deadly pesticides. If we can get just one of them to stop then the others will follow and stop selling them too.

Anyway, if you want to read more and sign a petition to stop Home Depot and Lowes, and other big retailers, from selling this product click here: Help Save the Bees

Meanwhile, on a lighter note, I have found some beautiful pieces on Etsy, all with a wonderful bee theme.

All artists are Canadian and their links are below.  Enjoy!

Sharing Sunday

It’s Sunday!

And that means another edition of Sharing Sunday is here!

Recently I was introduced to the art of needle felting.  I’d never heard of it before.  I knew about wet felting but this new idea of using a needle intrigued me.  I have been learning about it and bought a kit and some beautiful roving and will soon attempt to try my own hand at it soon.

In the meantime I wanted to share some very talented artists and their needle felting work.  Some of it just blows me away!  For instance, TangleWoodThicket makes the most gorgeous dragons that stand a few feet tall and are full of colour and whimsy.  FunFeltbyWinnie and MiloandBen create a softer, gentler feeling that’s full of character and makes wonder about the stories each piece holds inside.

As always, each shop is Canadian and the links are below.  Take a few minutes to browse the shops.  You won’t be disappointed.

Foodie Friday!

You will notice that a lot of the recipes I post are for baked foods.  I am more at home baking that I am cooking.  I love food and all the amazing smells coming from the kitchen and my favourite smells are from baking something sweet and yummy.

So today I am going to share my absolute favourite muffin recipe with you.  I make these all the time, but mostly when we have bananas that are getting a little too brown for anyone to eat by themselves.

The following recipe is mine.  I’ve altered one, that I found many years ago, to make it a tad healthier and yet still delicious.  My family has no idea the changes I’ve made and they think it’s just as good as the original recipe.

We prefer to make the muffins in mini size.  They are way more fun to eat and I find them easier to put in the kids’ lunch boxes when they’re small.

Here is my recipe:

    Banana Chip Muffins

    3/4 cup flour
    3/4 whole wheat flour
    1 Tbsp ground flax
    1 Tbsp wheat germ
    1 Tbsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt
    1 cup chocolate chips
    1 egg
    1/4 cup apple sauce
    1/4 cup milk
    3 mashed bananas

Measure first 7 ingredients into a large bow.  Mix thoroughly and make a well in the centre.

Beat egg in smaller bowl until frothy.  Mix in apple sauce, milk and bananas.  Pour into well.  Stir only to moisten.  Batter will be lumpy.

Fill greased muffin cups 3/4 full. (I always put more in and overflow the mini muffin tin)

Bake in 400F oven for 20-25 minutes for regular size or 18-20 for mini size.

The only changes left that I would like to make are finding a substitute for the sugar and maybe using carob chips or cacao nibs for the chocolate chips.  It’s fun to experiment and see what works.

If you have any sugar substitute suggestions I’d love to hear them.

Enjoy!

Foodie Friday

Last week was Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday.  We don’t follow the religious background for the day but we did have pancakes for dinner.  When I was young my Mom used to make us banana fritters.  They are so delicious and as soon as I introduced them to the boys they became an instant favourite.  They ask for them all the time and are a great way to use up an aging banana.

We sprinkle a little lemon juice and sugar on them and they are a wonderful quick and easy treat to make!

I am obviously not the best food photographer but you get the idea.  I make fun tiny ones for the boys too.
 Banana Fritters

1 mashed banana
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg

Heat oil in frying pan.  Test the heat of the oil with a little water.  If the water bounces off you know it’s hot enough.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl.

Pour batter into pan to make pancakes.  Flip pancakes when the edges start to bubble and turn a little golden.

Top with a little lemon juice and sugar and enjoy!

It's time for some craft shows!!

Well, it's that time of year again!  Time for some craft shows!

I have been accepted to 3 this year and I'm very excited!!  The first one is in October and is a new one for me.  It is taking place in Mississauga.  I'm a small town girl so when I hear Mississauga I think big time Toronto.  It's a one day show and it's going to be BIG!  2000-3000 visitors are expected!  I'm excited and nervous all at the same time.

I am really hoping to improve on my booth display this year and make it easier for people to shop.  I also have a TON of burning ideas that I hope I can get done in time for the show.

The other two shows are in the Durham region and are ones I have done before.  They are both in December so that gives me a nice break to gather my stock and my wits after the big Toronto one.

If you are in the area I would be tickled if you'd shop by and say hello!

Here are the shows….

October 19, 2013  11am - 5pm
International Centre, Hall 6
6900 Airport Road, Mississauga

Admission: $5 per adult (children free!)
FREE PARKING
From now until Sept. 30 you can get 35% off your ticket when you purchase online and use code "septnews13"
Please mention my name (Maya Wade) when you purchase your etickets.
Getting your tickets in advance means you miss the long line up to get in.  Trust me, it's a long line up!

Also, if you're one of the first 250 families through the door you will receive a swag bag with goodies from exhibitors at the show!

AND I've heard there is going to be a mega prize pack that will have a bunch of great items from some of the attending vendors.  When I hear more I will update here and on my Facebook page.

December 1, 2013  10am - 4:30pm

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!

Happy 146th Birthday Canada!!

Today is Canada day and in honour of this fun day I thought I'd share some interesting and amusing words and sayings that are unique to our great Country.

My source is "Only in Canada, You Say.  A Treasury of Canadian Language" by Katherine Barber, available through Amazon

Here are a few phrases we like to use:
done like dinner - utterly defeated
dream in Technicolor - be wildly unrealistic
give someone the gears - pester, hassle
take off the gloves - ready oneself or indicate readiness for a confrontation
no guff - a declaration of truthfulness
hang up one's skates - give up; quit or retire
kick at the can - an opportunity to do something
rhyme off - recite rapidly and spontaneously (a list of times)
go snaky - lose self-control
make strange - (of a baby or child) fuss or be shy in company

We have fun names for clothes too:
Gaunch, gitch and gotch are all names for underwear and of course we call our knitted winter hats toques.  An idiot string is what we call the string that attaches two mittens together that is strung through the sleeves and across the inside back of a child's coat, to prevent the mittens from being lost.

We like to call our Country "the Great White North", even if it isn't white all the time.  The island of Newfoundland (Labrador) is called "The Rock" while "ROC" stands for rest of Canada; the parts of Canada outside the province of Quebec.  "Spud Island" refers to Price Edward Island, because it produces potatoes.  "La-La Land" and "Lotus Land" are nicknames for British Columbia

We call Ottawa, our nation's capital, "Fat City" and Toronto is known as "Hogtown".  Calgary is "Cowtown", and Winnipeg is sometimes called "Winterpeg".

Hockey is our national sport.  We have a lot of different hockey terms and use some of them in everyday living:
dipsy-doodle - evade the defending team by using feints, demes, swerving motions and finesse in stick handling
pond hockey - informal or disorganized hockey played on a frozen pond.
shinny - informal pickup hockey played usually without nets, referees or equipment except skates, sticks and a ball or puck
spinarama - an evasive move consisting of an abrupt 360-degree turn

And here's our favourite, eh: "eh"

This is an excerpt from "Only in Canada, You Say"

"Canadians are inordinately proud of this one-sound particle as a marker of Canadian identity.  This pride is a little mystifying to me, since there is more--much more--to Canadian English than "eh".  When it is used in a phrase like "nice day, eh?", which solicits an affirmative response from the person you're talking to, "eh" is not unique to Canadian English…English speakers throughout the Commonwealth also use "eh" in this way, as what linguists call a "tag ending".

Where "eh" is uniquely Canadian is in the so-called "narrative eh", for instance in "I'm going to Winnipeg for Christmas, eh, so I'm packing  my long johns."  The person saying this is not expecting their interlocutor to say "Yes, indeed, you are going to Winnipeg."  It is just a filler word, almost as if we want to ascertain that the other person is still listening to us.  Other statements, like one I heard my bus driver making, "The bus stalled three times coming down, eh?", are similar.  Another classic Canadian use of "eh" is in a phrase that I use myself a lot.  Say your neighbour exclaims, "Geez, those dogs barking are driving me crazy"; you might respond, "Really, eh."  You are not expecting the neighbour to reply in turn, "Yes, really, you nitwit".  You are just making your agreement more emphatic."

Hope you had fun learning some of our unique words and phrases!  If you want to read more I highly recommend Katherine Barber's book!  Now let's raise a  barley sandwich (beer) and wish this great Country a very

Happy Birthday
CANADA!

I Commit to the 30 Day Challenge!

I have committed to Mayi Carles 30 Day Challenge.

It's really simple.  All you have to do is pick something you want to become a healthy  habit in your life.  Something you want to change for the better and do everyday.  Like eating healthier or exercising your body or mind.
From www.heartmadeblog.com

I have chosen two things to commit to....

#1. I have been exercising haphazardly for the last few months and I think this will be a great way to get into a better routine.  Therefore, my first commitment is to EXERCISE EVERYDAY…with a plan.

#2. The second is to better myself at my work.  I feel I have a lot to learn and I know that practise and stretching myself further is the way to get better.  My second commitment is to DRAW SOMETHING EVERYDAY.  I have a beautiful book on learning to zentangle and it just so happens to be an everyday kind of study.  It will fit in perfectly with this new challenge.

I encourage you to watch Mayi's video and make a commitment in your life as well..only if there is something you'd like to change of course.  If you're perfectly content then skip it and continue on.  : )

If you decide to commit with me, remember to add these tags to your social media as you update friends and the webworld: #heartmade #30daychallenge.

You can follow my progress on twitter: @mayabki
and on instagram: @mayabki
and probably Facebook too: www.facebook.com/bkinspired.

The challenge starts Monday, March 11!!
Hope to see you out there!

I enjoy skimming through Facebook

I really do enjoy seeing what interesting things people have posted on Facebook.  Things that I never would have found on my own.  Sure, it "wastes" time but it also gives me a way to interact with my friends and other people that doesn't drain my energy, as explained in this oh-so-clever Guide to Understanding Introverts from www.lolsnaps.com

So if you want to learn something very important about me, read on....

PB + J Monday

Do you have a library card?

I love mine.  We have moved a few times over the last several years and one of the first things I do, once we’re settled, is get a card for the nearest library.  I find it so exciting to wander through the shelves of books of topics that I wouldn't have on my own bookshelves at home.  And then when I'm at home I can wander through their site and find even more books in the library system that may be at another branch, but that I can still have access to.  Sometimes it just feels too good to be true!

The library opens up countless other worlds of possibilities.   Without having to pay thousands of dollars on novels or movie rentals or how-to books you can borrow anything.  If there is a new craft, cookbook or home improvement idea you want to try but a little hesitant, you can try it with no risk with a book from the library first.

If a friend has recommended a book but you’re not sure it’s your taste you don’t have to go out and buy it the generous library will loan it to you.  And if you find out you don’t like it you can just give it back.  No questions asked.

I recently checked out this book by Danny Seo, UpCycling, Create Things With The Stuff You Already Have.  It was really good and had some wonderful ideas in it but I’m glad I didn’t buy it.  His ideas are very creative but most of them don’t really fit with my family’s lifestyle and the book, if purchased, would just sit on the shelf and gather dust.  Instead, I was able to take it back to the library and feel good about having seen it and learning some creative upcycling (some of which I may share another time).

I love taking the kids there too.  They get excited to see familiar books their friends are reading that we don’t have.  And the library offers some really fun events for them.

The library has hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.  And if you’re lucky to have a library that sells their books you can find some serendipitous deals there too.

I love books and we have lots of them on lots of bookshelves in our home.  But if we didn’t have the library our house would be overrun and we’d be very, very poor.  The library is a wonderful way to still keep that manageable and help the environment.

So if you don’t have a library card...what are you waiting for???  Go get one!  Today!  You won’t regret it.

Things Happy People Do Differently

Here's an interesting article to read.  It would take a lot of mental exercise to remember these 15 strategies, while you're out in the world dealing with daily challenges, but sure worth it.  Being happy feels so much better than being unhappy and it makes a difference in every aspect of your life.

Organized?

One of the reasons I've been so bad at keeping the blog up to date is organization.  I have lots of great ideas but I need to have them planned out or it doesn't happen.

So, I've grabbed a calendar and I'm trying to force myself to write everything down in an effort to stay on top of upcoming events and promotions and to keep the blog and my Facebook page some what regular and interesting.  That's the key point: interesting.  It has be interesting for me too so I want to share what gets my juices flowing with you.

I love to bake (cooking not as much) and I have a few favourite recipes I'd like to share.  I also love to experiment and try new things and so I thought I would add that into the blog as a regular piece...about every two weeks you'll see something food related.  I have decided that I will post this on Fridays so if you're interested in a new yummy recipe, or want to know what not to do, look me up on Fridays.  I don't have a name for this yet.  If you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear it!

I am also interested in trying to live a green life.  I am not fanatic about it but there are some things in our life that we do and that I'd like to do that I think are pretty good (pat on the back) and I'd like to share them with you.  I tried to do that before but I found I was becoming a little too preachy.  I will do my very best to give only the facts this time.  I called it PB+J Mondays for (polar bears and jellyfish).  Look for that on Mondays again.  Probably not every Monday but when I do have something green to share that will be the day.

Another thing I enjoy doing is taking pictures.  I have had no photography training and I'd love to take a class or have the time to teach myself but that isn't always so easy.  So maybe experimenting and sharing it with you here will help me to learn and get better.  Again, it may not be a regular post every week but when I do post a picture it will be on Wednesday for Wordless Wednesdsay.

So that takes care of Monday, Wednesday and Friday for some sort of regularity.  The other days will have promotions that are going on, featured shops and artists I really like (and think you will too), and new items and projects I'm working on.

I hope you'll come back again and keep me company while I share a bit about myself and my life and while I experiment and learn new things!

PB + J Monday

Welcome to PB + J Monday!

This is where I share "green" things I find interesting and useful, either on the internet, in books or magazines, that I want to share with you.

Today I want to share a Guiness Breaking Record!

Our little community of Clarington helped break the Guiness Record for the most batteries collected in a 24 hour period!

Residents of our community, and the rest of Durham Region, were notified a couple of months ago that our recycling trucks would now be collecting dead batteries twice a year.  What great news!  It's so hard to know what to do with those old batteries.  We were so used to simply throwing them away in the garbage until we learned the damage and danger it was causing in the landfills.  Our family had been collecting them and bringing them to local places that accepted them but it was sometimes hard to find places that would do that.  But now, we have the convenience of knowing they'll be picked up twice a year at the curb.  And it's nice to know that those people who may not have heard about not throwing batteries in the garbage have an alternative too.  It's great!!

The old record for battery collection was just over 440 lbs.  The Region of Durham collected an incredible 11,288 pounds (almost 5,120 kilograms) of batteries!!!!  Now that's how to break a record!

On the video you can hear that Durham Region is the first large municipality in Canada to collect batteries.

If you'd like to read more about us breaking the record the link is at the bottom.  There is also a few pictures and a video.  Yay, Clarington!  Just one more little step to helping the environment.

http://www.durhamregion.com/news/article/1536875--final-update-durham-region-destroys-guinness-record-for-most-batteries-collected-in-a-day

What does PB + J stand for?   Polar Bears and Jellyfish of course.

I'm Back!!

Wow!  I didn't realize how long I'd been away from the blog!  I am very sorry to have disappeared!  I am going to try very hard to get to the blog a lot more regularly in the future.

One of the reasons I was MIA was because I was preparing for a 3 day craft show that happened at the end of October.  I worked very hard creating new pieces for the two months that led up to the show.  Here is a picture of my booth with my Mom and myself.  This was at the end of the show and we were pretty tired.
I will be adding more pictures to the "My Work" section.  And sharing some of the really fun custom orders I've been working on as well.  I am also hoping to have some regular content to share on here, things that interest me and hopefully you too. And I have a few very special upcoming events to share that you won't want to miss!

In the meantime, feel free to pop on over to my Facebook page where I do most of my updating: www.facebook.com/bkinspired

And join my quarterly newsletter (next one out in January) by sending your email address to: bki[at]hotmail.ca

Glad to be back!

I will be back!

I hope everyone is having a great summer!  We certainly are!  But it's almost over and that means the boys will be going back to school and I will have a lot more time to create and publish posts on the blog again.  I have some great ideas for posts and burning projects.  Let's just hope I can get myself organized enough to make it all happen.

Stay tuned, I will be back!
